Writing Cool Stories
So, my friend and neighbor just down the road a piece has started up a new First Response squad (those people who have some emergency medical training, and show up at your house before the ambulance can get there - critical out here in the boonies).  We've had one here in my town that I started about three years ago, but hers is just a wee young thing.  They have almost no equipment, a very small budget, and all of their townsfolk are even further from ambulance services and hospitals than mine are - their services are critical.

So my friend and neighbor came up with this really cool idea:  They're having a writing contest.  If you have a story that is in some way about EMS (Emergency Medical Services), and you think you can write it well so that we'll love to read it (I know you - all of you are excellent writers), you can enter ($35).  The entry fees are all pooled, and half of the money supports the new squad, while the other half goes to writers of the selected top three stories.  First prize is guaranteed to be at least $1000.  You can read more about it here.  I just checked, and fiction is fine, too.  I believe submissions need to be in by Sept 1st.

I'm pretty excited about this.  I'm one of the people who gets to read these stories - it's going to be so much fun!

Would some of you please pass on this message to anyone you think might be interested?  I'd really like to help out this new squad and make their contest a big success.

Thank you!

Sounds like an interesting way to raise funds.

Took me a moment to ponder why they were starting a group "being just down the road a piece" till I took a look at the local geography, Oh my and I always thought we were rural. Another place to visit next time we get up that way :-)

Remember if you ever get this way we'll take you on a tour of our station and maybe have you run with us.

travel
Visiting would be cool, as would going for a ride:) I've been a stick-at-home for a year or so, ever since I finally finished my dissertation and don't need to be going to Chicago all the time. I imagine this will wear off in a year or five, and I'll be able to leave my squad for short periods and travel again.

The "just down the road" squad is fortunate to have a bunch of people who are very dedicated and have a lot of drive. All of us have struggles to contend with, the rural aspect not being the least of these, but I think they will do well.
