OMG DSL down!!!1!
Fairpoint took out my DSL.  I'm betting that, anyway.  Mom's is out, too.  When I called at 6:50, they said they were having trouble with my type of modem and they were going to try a "global fix."  And that I should call back in a few hours for an update.  I called back after about 3 hours (modem still not working) and they said they'd ship me a new modem.  They were doing a whole bunch of changes and "upgrades" over the past few weeks, and I'm guessing that at 5:30 this afternoon, they "upgraded" something such that it now refuses to talk to my modem.

So, don't expect me to be posting a lot between now and next week.  Not that I normally would anyway.....

Maybe I'll do some solid stuff for the next several days, instead of electron handwaving.  There's a novel thought.

Windstream did that to me a few weeks ago. Nobody that I talked to mentioned anything about upgrades, but I'm pretty sure that's the reason my old DSL modems stopped working.

The tech they made me take the next day off work to wait for ("he'll be there sometime between 8 and 5" was the best they could tell me. grrr.) didn't do anything to help. On the third day, after I'd called them back to tell them that even though they'd "closed" the help ticket the problem wasn't solved, they dropped off a new modem for me.

On the fourth day, after spending a few hours finally talking to someone with a clue (but who didn't believe me when I told him I had a static IP address, and it wasn't 192.168.something) I got it working again.

Honestly, if I wouldn't have still had to deal with Windstream, I probably would've gone back to dial-up after going through all that.

re: OMG DSL down!!!1!
A new modem will be nice, I suppose, but I'm not looking forward to the hour (or much more) that it will probably take to get it talking. This one was amazing: I was on the phone for four hours with India (and a very thick accent) before they figured it out. Turns out the passwords and stuff they give you are non-functional, and you can only set up the modem with the administrative access.

Anyway. I'll be doing it all over again as soon as the modem gets here, I'm sure.

Dialup. Such nostalgia.

Dial-up=what I have at home. Does this make me a Luddite?
