Amused by trivia
An aside at fivethirtyeight.com:

"Technically, Obama will be sworn in January 20, 2009, but nobody disputes that an impotent George Bush has essentially curled into a fetal ball in the face of the massive economic crisis and that Obama is acting as de facto President."

If only. Obama has all the responsibility of a president (look at all the talking heads blaming him for the stock market) with only advisory power. I loved the notion that Cheney and Bush should resign after appointing him Secretary of State so that he could take office for real.

The column I saw assumed that Pelosi (and whoever else, president pro tempore of the senate i think) would waive their succession rights, which they could probably do by taking office and immediately resigning...

SoS is the first executive-branch position after potus and veep (sounds like a 70s road movie) in the line of succession, hence the relevant one to be reached by appointment rather than election.
